Head of THRF Group - MESHA

Lead research. Shape policy. Improve lives.

The Hospital Research Foundation Group - Military and Emergency Services Health Australia (THRFG MESHA), is a nationally recognised collaborative research and development centre delivering culturally informed, translational research and programs that shape policy, services and systems.

At THRFG MESHA, we exist for one reason: to improve the mental health, wellbeing and functioning of current and former serving Australian military members, emergency service personnel — and the families who stand beside them.

About the role

This is a rare opportunity to lead a highly respected, purpose‑driven portfolio with national reach and real‑world impact.

Reporting to the Chief of Client and Patient Services, the Head of Department – THRFG MESHA holds end‑to‑end accountability for the performance, sustainability and growth. You will lead across research, programs, governance, workforce and partnerships, translating evidence into action and strategy into tangible outcomes.

As an exceptional leader you will:

  • Lead a contemporary, needs‑based research and program portfolio that informs policy, practice and service delivery
  • Shape and execute strategy aligned to sector need, emerging evidence and community priorities
  • Ensure the highest standards of research integrity, ethics, clinical governance and lived‑experience engagement
  • Drive sustainable growth through diversified funding, grant success and national expansion
  • Build and lead a high‑performing, values‑driven workforce that is innovative, collaborative and psychologically safe
  • Represent THRFG MESHA with influence across government, defence, emergency services, health, research and community sectors

At its heart, this role is about turning knowledge into impact — ensuring the voices and experiences of military and emergency services communities are embedded respectfully and meaningfully in everything we do.

About you

You are a credible, values‑led leader with experience delivering complex research, programs or services at scale. You bring strategic insight, operational discipline and courageous leadership, with:

  • Relevant postgraduate qualifications (Doctorate desirable)
  • Research and/or program development experience
  • Proven leadership of multidisciplinary teams fostering growth and change
  • Strong financial stewardship, business development and grant funding capability
  • Engagement with government, peak bodies, research partners and community stakeholders
  • Ethical practice, collaboration and continuous improvement commitment

Experience with defence, emergency services, mental health, community or lived‑experience‑led workforces is highly regarded.

Why join us?

Your work will matter — every day.

  • Lead nationally trusted, evidence-based work with real-world impact
  • Influence policy, programs and service systems
  • Support and amplify the voices of those who have served
  • Join a values‑driven organisation committed to integrity, wellbeing and impact.

This role offers both professional challenge and deep purpose.

Ready to lead with impact?

If you are inspired to shape research, programs and systems that improve outcomes for Australia’s military and emergency services communities, we would love to hear from you.
